Celebrities And Their Gay Siblings
TGHS feels that one of the most compelling reasons why the GLBT fight for acceptance and equal rights is finally taking hold is because people are finally starting to realize that we are people just like everybody else (maybe even a little better.) ;) Everyone now has a family member that is out and proud. Gay people are no longer some part of society that the “straight” community doesn’t know, they are your brothers, sisters, cousins, fathers and mothers. Please visit Cha Chai for the full details and story.
Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who appears as a judge on ‘The Voice,’ spoke about his gay brother Michael in an interview with ‘Out’ Magazine. “I can single-handedly dispel any ideas that sexuality is acquired. Trust me, you’re born with it. My brother is gay, and we knew when he was two. We all knew.
Actress Anne Hathaway, who has played in a variety of films from ‘The Princess Diaries’ to ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ has an older brother, Michael, who is gay.
Chris told ‘The Advocate’ in 2009, “Yes, I do have a gay brother. I’m down with the gays. Mostly I’m hanging out with him and his gay buddies, who are [...] hilarious. They’re the funniest people I know. They’ve invited me out to gay bars before, and I said, ‘Look, guys, I’ve got to draw the line there.’ That’s where a photo will get taken, it will run in magazines, and before you know it, I’ll be living down the gay rumor for the rest of my life.”
He has said of his brother, “I can’t remember much about the years of physical and emotional abuse my brother Eamon suffered. My brother was so forceful in standing up for who he was, and for the good that he knew was inside of him. Many people missed out on an opportunity, not only to enjoy him, but to enjoy themselves by embracing his “difference.”
Australian ‘True Blood’ hunk Ryan Kwanten has a gay brother, too. Lloyd Kwanten is a doctor, and Ryan said in an interview with ‘The Advocate’: “He was probably about 18 when he came out, and I can wholeheartedly tell you that from the day that he did, he was a changed man for the better. The sheer beauty of who he is really came through.“
Actress and recording artist Madonna is known to many as a gay icon, but homosexuality actually hits close to home for Madge: Her brother, Chris Ciccone, is gay. In the past, the two were extremely close; she even described them as the closest members in her family.
Country singer Garth Brooks‘ sister, guitarist Betsy Smittle, is a lesbian, and he had the following to say in an interview about his song “We Shall Be Free”: “Where the gay issue has hit me the most is my sister. I’ve lived with that forever. And the thing is, the longer you live with it, the more you realize that it’s just another form of people loving one another.”
1980s music icon Cyndi Lauper is an avid supporter of gay rights, and a lot of that stems from her family life. Her sister,Ellen, is a lesbian, and Cyndi has said that, “My sister is a lesbian — and she’s one of the most fantastic people I know. It’s a family issue. If you can’t vouch for people in your own family, who are you going to vouch for?“
Actor Richard Gere is an advocate for gay marriage rights and stands firmly against California’s Proposition 8 gay marriage ban. When speaking on the subject, he has brought up his sibling David: “My brother is gay and he got married in that brief period when gay marriage was allowed in California. He has two great kids and is a wonderful father.”
Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is no stranger to homosexuality. Her brother, David, is gay. He works as an executive at Initial Entertainment Group, a production company behind such films as ‘Blood Diamond,’ ‘The Aviator,’ and ‘Gangs of New York.’
There you have it, we think it’s inspiring how these celebrities feel about their gay siblings and we appreciate them helping our cause for acceptance and equal rights.
